Emmy Show Comments – 09/18/07

September 18, 2007

Hi Everyone:

Boy, there’s a chill in the air here in New England!!! Actually had to use the ‘defrost’ this morning.

When I got home last night I ‘rewound’ the Emmys, got settled and prepared to watch. I have to admit that a good part of the show found itself at the curse of my ‘fast forward’ button!

Don’t think the ‘theater in the round’ worked but I give them points for giving it a shot. Ryan Seacrest was OK… no Ellen.

Highlights for me were:
Joe Mantegna introducing the Jersey Boys who were singing songs from Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. This was music that you would have heard on The Sopranos over the years. (For those of you who watched the show, you will remember that Frankie was on some of the episodes.) They were terrific. After they sang, The Sopranos (cast and crew) walked on the stage. They came from all the aisles and Tony, Carmella, Meadow and AJ walked up from the trap door. Really cool! How much will we miss this show? Probably the best all around show that’s ever been on TV over the years. We’ll all miss them.

OK, other highlights: Lewis Black (he is soooo funny) did a few minutes of monologue. You could see Jon Stewart laughing his head off in the audience. Lewis made a few really good points among the laughs.

Ricky Gervais winning the best Comedy Award Actor….and Jon Stewart calling up Steve Carell to get it since Ricky didn’t make the effort to come to the show….loved it when Steve Colbert, Jon and Steve all jumped up and down, screaming their heads off!!! (of course, their all good friends of Ricky’s and I’m sure he got a kick out of it when he saw it!!!)

Winners and Losers:

Best Comedy: 30 Rock
(I chose Entourage but am wicked happy that 30 Rock won. Tina Fey was a riot when she said she wanted to thank the dozens and dozens of people who watch the show!!!)

Best Drama: The Sopranos
(me too!)

Made for TV Movie: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee
(out on DVD)

Mini Series: Broken Trail (this show also had Thomas Hayden Church and Robert Duvall as winners….excellent mini series on TNT).

Lead Actor in Comedy Series: Ricky Gervais for Extras
(I had chosen Tony Shalhoub for Monk)

Lead Actor in a Drama Series: James Spader for Boston Legal

(good choice but it could have honestly been anyone in this category; I had picked James Gandolfini)

Lead Actress in a Comedy: America Ferrera for Ugly Betty
(I had chosen Mary-Louise Parker for WEEDS).

Lead Actress in a Drama: Sally Field for Brothers & Sisters
(I had chosen Edie Falco. I was waiting for Sally to give her ‘you like me, you really like me’ speech but, instead she decided to be political and called for the kids to come home…nice thought Sally. A lot of us feel the same way but it’s really not the place to express your conviction.)

Lead Actress in a Mini-Series or Movie: Helen Mirren for Prime Suspect
I didn’t choose this one but I’m thrilled that Helen won. She’s had quite a year!!! Prime Suspect, by the way, is out on DVD…the whole series!

Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series: Jeremy Piven, Entourage
(I had chosen Kevin Dillon of the same show. Jeremy certainly seemed sincere and humble in his acceptance speech.)

Supporting Actor in a Drama Series: Terry O’Quinn for Lost

(I had chosen William Shatner, who was wicked cool in his own right!)
I was thrilled to see that Terry is married to a ‘plump’ lady..and a very pretty one at that. Don’t see much of that in LaLa Land!!!)

Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series: Jaime Pressly, My Name is Earl
(I had chosen Elizabeth Perkins of WEEDS).

Supporting Actress in a Drama Series: Katherine Heigl of Grey’s Anatomy
(My pick was Aida Turturro) “Izzy” was funny when she said that her mother told her she didn’t have a chance in hell of winning!

Supporting Actress in a Mini Series or Movie: Judy Davis, The Starter Wife

(Love Judy Davis in anything she is in!)

Variety, Music, Comedy Series: The Daily Show!!!!!

Reality Series: The Amazing Race (got another one…)

Tony Bennett seemed to win for every award he was nominated for. It’s a great show that you can catch on PBS.

And finally….the hit of the night, for me, was ELAINE STRITCH. She won for Guest Starring on 30 Rock as Alec Baldwin’s mom. Elaine has gotta be in her 70s now and she’s still right on the money!!! Smart and as funny as ever.

OK, I’m sure there’s more that I missed. Sorry, I was fast forwarding so I could get to watch “Poker with Daniel Negreanu!”. I hope I at least gave you a little taste of the show’s overview.

Talk to you later in the week,

Joanie

(I wonder how Robin Thicke’s weekend went?)
