Atonement and other news 02/04/08

February 4, 2008
Hi Everyone:
Hope you all had a nice weekend.  My congratulations goes out to the New York Giants – winners of Superbowl 42!  They played the better game.  It’s sad that our PATRIOTS had to end the season with an 18-1 year and the only game we lost was the Superbowl.  I wonder if the ‘72 Dolphins breathed a sigh of relief!!!!???
How about some news from Friday on….
Julianna Margulies (ER) and her hubby welcomed a baby boy, Kieran Lindsay.
Star Jones’ show has bit the dust!  Hope she doesn’t start eating now.  Of course, as she said on Larry King, she IS a lawyer!
George Clooney, who has been appointed a Peace Messenger for the UN took his concerns for Darfur to the press.  He said, “There are some groups protecting 250 sq. kilometers of desert with no helicopters and no radios that work.”  George is trying to get much needed help for the Sudanese people.  I can understand his frustrations with the UN that they will not give the forces protecting the Sudan the means to protect themselves.  He and Don Cheadle just came back from the area.  George said, “Either give them the equipment they need or have the decency to send them home.  And go back to your offices and wait until it’s over!”
Jordin Sparks, the current winner of Season Six of AI, was terrific yesterday singing the Star Spangled Banner.  Jordin’s dad, Phillippi, played for the New York Giants until 2001.  I’m sure her whole family was celebrating after the game!
Katharine McPhee married her BFF, producer Nick Cokos on Saturday, Feb. 2nd.  Shes 23; he’s 42.  Congrats to both.
I guess Paula Abdul performed yesterday (didn’t see it).  I did see part of the video today though and it’s a ‘rehash’ of her old song, “Forever Your Girl!”  Randy helped produce it and was playing guitar during the song.  By the way, speaking of Randy, I watched a little of a new MTV show on the greatest American dance group over the weekend.  I guess it starts for real this week.  Busy boy that Randy!
Watched EASTERN PROMISES on ON DEMAND on Friday night.  It was very good and I can see why the movie, as well as Viggo Mortenson, were nominated for Oscars.  There’s subtitles woven thru it but it can’t be helped because of the storyline.
I went to the movies yesterday and saw ATONEMENT.  It’s a dark, depressing (I went cause I wanted to try and get my mind off of “The Game”!) and marvelous movie.  Everyone who has been nominated for Oscars certainly deserve the recognition.  The soundtrack brought you right into the moment too.  Very good movie.
The BAFTA’s
Sunday, February 10th from 8PM to 11PM, the BBC will broadcast the British equivalent of the Oscars.  Because the WGA are still on strike (although I hear that a settlement could be any day now….please!), this could be THE AWARDS show of the season.  All the Americans who have been nominated will certainly ‘cross the pond’ in their designer frocks and jewelry!
It will be fun although you’ll probabaly have to switch to SAP so that you can understand what the Brits are saying!
Finally, watched a lot of IN TREATMENT on HBO over the weekend.  It stars Gabriel Byrne as a therapist and each session is for about 25 minutes and has a different patient each night.  It is also ON DEMAND which I recommend you turn on to watch.  Excellent series.
OK, not much on tonight – AI goes to Atlanta tomorrow night and it is the ‘best of the rest’ on Wednesday.  I’m ready for “Hollywood, baby!”
Talk to you on Thursday.
